Uncommon Common Sense

Uncommon Common Sense Embed from Getty Images This is considered one of a sequence of posts based on the book Everything is Obvious, Once You Know the Answer by Duncan Watts. Watts is a sociologist who's a principal researcher at Microsoft Research and a Professor at Large at Cornell University. He was a professor of Sociology at Columbia University from , and then a principal analysis scientist at Yahoo! Research, where he directed the Human Social Dynamics group. He begins his e-book with quotes from individuals who don’t imagine that social sciences are actual science; couldn’t we simply have figured that out through the use of widespread sense? It seems â€" most likely not. “Common sense is how we all know what to put on when we go to work in the morning, how to behave on the road or the subway, and tips on how to maintain harmonious relationships with our associates and coworkers,” he writes. “It tells us when to obey the rules, when to quietly ignore them, and when to face up and challenge the foundations themselves.” But widespread sense comes from observing, studying, and adopting tons of, even thousands, of unstated rules and social cues. That’s one cause robots will never be capable of completely impersonate a human. There are simply too many variables on acceptable behavior which are by no means written down â€" you simply have to know them. Watts writes: “…in order to educate a robot to imitate even a limited range of human habits, you would have to, in a way, teach it every thing about the world.” Watts cites the example of driving on a subway. When the subway is crowded, we don’t mind in any respect that we’re packed in carefully next to different riders. But if the car is sort of empty, somebody standing proper next to you'd be creepy and uncomfortable. We all understand that we’re anticipated to spread out according to the space obtainable, but we are able to’t exactly articulate why. He writes, “People who lack common sense are a bit li ke the hapless robotic in that they never appear to know what it's that they need to be listening to, and they never seem to understand what it's that they don’t understand. And for exactly the same reason that programming robots is tough, it’s surprisingly hard to clarify to someone missing in frequent sense what it is that they’re doing wrong.” It’s one of many causes that folks on the autism spectrum wrestle to seek out work and fit in at their workplace. They don’t all the time decide up the social cues that teach us how to act and respond to others. What is “widespread sense” for us will not be the identical for them. In reality, Watts writes, “widespread sense is “common” only to the extent that two individuals share sufficiently related social and cultural experiences. Common sense, in different words, depends on what the sociologist Harry Collins calls collective tacit data, meaning that it is encoded in the social norms, customs, and practices of the w orld.” Common sense will differ between two cultures, two households, or even two folks. That’s one of many premises of Watts’ guide: that we will’t rely simply on our common sense to know social points or solve issues. “That what is self-evident to one particular person may be seen as foolish by another should give us pause in regards to the reliability of frequent sense as a basis for understanding the world. How can we be assured that what we consider is true when someone else feels equally strongly that it’s mistakenâ€" particularly once we can’t articulate why we expect we’re right within the first place?” Because all of us assume that common sense may remedy most of society’s problems, we are inclined to disparage those who think in another way. We see things in another way, primarily based on our personal expertise and filters, and it’s nearly unimaginable to understand people who don’t agree. The problem is, in accordance with Watts, that policy maker s and “experts” also have these constructed-in biases, but they don’t acknowledge them â€" they suppose they assume more clearly than the Common Man, who’s counting on Common Sense. Future posts will explore extra of why everything is clear, as soon as you understand the reply. Gender Equality Scorecard 2018 - FlexCareers and Employer Partners are closing the gap

Gender Equality Scorecard 2018 - FlexCareers and Employer Partners are closing the gap It is so exciting to read change is happening in Australian workplaces. FlexCareers is a WGEA  (Workplace Gender Equality Agency) Pay Equity Offical Supporter and now they published their  latest gender equality scorecard the numbers are looking promising. Accumulating 5 years of data from the private sector, the scorecard is showing employer action to increase gender equality is working. Yes! At FlexCareers, we cant help but celebrate such good news and are so proud to be part of the process through our partnerships. We partner with WGEA and progressive employers and utilise our unique technology, research, and strategic consulting services to achieve gender diversity by making flexible work a reality for more people. The WGEA data shows a steady increase in the number of women in management roles and strong growth in employer action in areas such as overall gender equality policies and strategies, pay equity and flexible work.  The gender pay gap has declined every year since WGEA started collecting data, with 2017-2018 seeing the biggest drop in the average full-time total remuneration gender pay gap (down 1.1%). Source Workplace Gender Equality Agency WGEA Director Libby Lyons The Agency’s director, Libby Lyons, says  the dataset shows that employer initiatives and actions have delivered real outcomes: “The five years of data collection demonstrates the value of measuring workplace gender equality. We have clear evidence that employer action delivers real results and we should recognise the great work many employers have done in addressing issues such as pay equity.” “Our consulting team works with leaders from organisations around Australia and New Zealand to define and embed key policies and initiatives such as flexible working, but that is just the starting point.  Changing attitudes and behaviours to drive deep cultural change is the only way to make real progress and we are so proud to be able to support so many on that journey,” says our CEO Natalie Goldman. Flexible Working The increase in organisations like Vodafone  embracing strategies or policies to improve gender equality such as remuneration data analysis, succession planning, talent identification, retention and promotion and aligning manager KPIs is encouraging to watch and indicative of how attitudes are changing for the better. The fact that seven out of ten employers now have either a policy or strategy in place to promote flexible work is fantastic and edging flexibility to be the norm, not the exception. The industry with the greatest increase in this area is  Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services who overtook Financial and Insurance Services with a 4.0pp increase to become the industry with the highest proportion of organisations with a formal policy and/or strategy on flexible working arrangements (87.0%). The  strongest improvements were in Transport, Postal and Warehousing (up 9.9pp to 64.7%) and Information, Media and Telecommunications (up 4.4pp to 80.1%). Our partnerships with Lion,  Icon Water, AGL Energy, Telstra and Xero  attest to the  turning of the  tide. Its very encouraging to see a 2.4% increase in the number of organisations reporting they have a formal flexibility policy and/or strategy in place. Leaders are becoming role models of flexible working as a result of organisations actively promoting flexible working through the business and leadership. Flexibility is a massive enabler for gender equality and in the marketplace right now there is a huge focus on it, Ms Goldman says. Working flexibly doesnt mean working less â€" it means working differently. In the digital age, working 8am to 6pm isnt right because we can log in and log out as needed. Source Workplace Gender Equality Agency A smaller pay gap won’t fix the super gap Whilst steady progress is being made, the WGEA data equally brings to light areas in need of continuous improvement. Included is virtually no increase in the number of women in CEO roles and around boardroom tables and access to paid parental leave hasnt progressed much further. In fact, the report highlights more than half of the employers provide no access to paid primary carers leave in addition to the government scheme. This number has dropped to 47.8% over the last 5 years. Employee access, and duration, of any paid leave, depends highly on the size and industry of the employer. When we consider women account for 72.2% of all carers leave (versus men making up the remaining 27.8% source WGEA) with a high proportion leaving the workforce before the 12-month period due to lack of support form the workplace,   it comes as no surprise  one of the key contributing factors to women retiring with 42% less super than men is the gender pay gap and its cumulative effect over time. Whilst a smaller pay gap means women will have a little bit more super to retire with, there is still a long way to go before women’s retirement savings are on par with men’s. A hot topic we are closely following at FlexCareers and a gap we want to see and help decrease. Promising Improvements have been made, with WGEA’s data showing that more employers are supporting flexible work, which will allow more women to return to work and start earning super again. Women’s promotions are also on the rise, which means they will be earning more and thus taking home larger super payments. Support from the top FlexCareers CEO Natalie Goldman We now need even more employers to take action so that we can accelerate the momentum for gender equality in Australian workplaces,” said Ms Lyons. Having the support of top-level management is crucial, Managers are the lynchpin to success. Managers are at the front line, they are at the absolute heart of implementing flexible work and it’s important to involve them in the process from day one and support them to be successful. They will implement the strategy and bring it to life, says Ms Goldman, There’s more and more research that shows that having a gender-diverse and equally-balanced organisation, at all levels, leads to increased profitability, productivity and innovation. A number of FlexCareers partner CEOs active roles in organisations such as the  Male Champions of Change  (AU),  Champions for Change  (NZ) and work on developing strategies and tools to achieve pay equity and drive change across their respective industries. As Steve McCann, Group CEO and Managing Director of FlexCareers partner  Lendlease, puts it, “There is no excuse for men to be paid more than women for work that has the same accountability, breadth and difficulty, and for which they have comparable performance, competence and experience. We’ve learned that gender-based pay gaps can be both common and insidious â€" particularly in historically male-dominated sectors. Having regular, scrutinised and actionable reporting is a game changer â€" real-time access to relevant data becomes hard to ignore and demands action.” FlexCareers is encouraged by the positive steps made by Australian businesses.  Ms Goldman said: “Whilst we still have a long way to go, we are excited by the progress made- particularly in the last 12 months. This data set, together with the conversations we are having with leaders from Australian and New Zealand businesses, clearly demonstrate to us that the contribution women make is valued and that is recognised that more needs to be done to redress the balance of power in the workplace and at home.” Read more about our Employer Partners and how well businesses in Australia and New Zealand are embracing workplace flexibility in our Workplace Flexibility Report 2018

6 top phone interview questions and how to answer them

6 top telephone inquiries questions and how to answer them You've placed your resume in for an employment opportunity, and now you have your first nibbleâ€"a telephone meet. The telephone meet doesn't occur in each application/talk with process, however you may experience it for two reasons: googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-promotion 1467144145037-0'); }); You're as of now far away from the recruiting company. The organization needs to do a starter meeting to check whether they need to acquire you for a progressively customary plunk down interview.Either way, the telephone meet is likely a forerunner to a physical gathering, before noteworthy time and assets are contributed. The principle objective of a telephone meet is for the most part to check whether you meet certain necessities and would almost certainly be a solid match for the activityâ€"or if nothing else for the following round. On the off chance that an organization has a ton of incredible on-paper candidates for a solitary position, telephone interviews a re an approach to limit the competitor pool to the most fitting people. How is a telephone talk with different? There's the conspicuous arrangement contrast, first off. Rather than genuinely sitting eye to eye with somebody, shaking hands, and having the option to peruse non-verbal communication prompts, you're perched without anyone else and have no face to face contact or perceivability with the individual talking you. That can be an advantage (it's the one meeting you can go to in your nightgown! Except if it's a Skype meet), yet in addition a downside. You're in somewhat of a void, relying on your conversational aptitudes to the exclusion of everything else to get you through to the following round. Also, while an in-person meet is for the most part with the employing supervisor for your position, that may not be valid for a telephone meet. You might be conversing with a Human Resources agent or even a selection representative. It's imperative to know in advance the individual with whom you'll be talking, so you can adjust your answers as needs be. On the off chance that it's a spotter or HR individual, you can be somewhat more broad. On the off chance that it's the recruiting supervisor, you ought to be progressively point by point about your capabilities in the particular field, with quick and dirty details. How to plan for your telephone interviewAlthough you don't have to prepare your meeting outfit or work on your handshake, you can even now chip away at your talking and listening skills.Make sure your voice is quiet, certain, and conversational. On the off chance that it causes you to call another person first (like a companion or a relative) directly before the meeting to get into conversational mode, do it. Anything that comforts you and prepares you to discuss yourself unhesitatingly is acceptable. On the off chance that it assists with sprucing up in your typical meeting garments to get into that mode, go for it.Be sure that when you're talking, your voice is additionally warm and conversational. Some portion of the reason for the telephone meet is (how about we be gruff here) to check that you're, well, interviewable. You need to appear to be neighborly and equipped; if your voice is pushed or your tone is cool, the questioner may think there are some warnings hiding underneath your words. As for your listening abilities, you won't have the upside of doing the head gesture + mindful I'm tuning in face, so it's imperative to ensure the questioner realizes you're tuning in. The 3 Questions I Ask Myself Before Doing Too Much Just to Work Hard

The 3 Questions I Ask Myself Before Doing Too Much Just to 'Buckle down' Hold your head down. Buckle down, and you will be recognized. This is the mantra that drove me for a large portion of my life. In the same way as other offspring of foreigner guardians, I was instilled with an exceptionally solid hard working attitude. My father moved to the U.S. at a youthful age and needed to stir his way up to the top. He held various employments, including janitor, despite the fact that he has been taught as an architect in India. He worked day and night with my mom close by to manufacture an extraordinary life for his family. Both my folks buckled down in light of the fact that difficult work pays off. Difficult work drives results. Difficult work gets you what you need. Work and work and work, and afterward work some more. You will be perceived. You will be rewarded. In a few different ways, it was the misguided feeling of the American dream that I carried with me into my first day in corporate America. That difficult work, drudging ceaselessly, getting ready and all the more planning. Feeling that my persevering endeavors would mysteriously be recognized. In those early days, my buckle down mantra prompted consistent over-arrangement, a need to see each and every detail on different occasions over, similar to I was continually getting ready for end of the year tests. It prompted consistent losses. Since frequently, the final product was the final product and it was an entirely decent outcome. What's more, in corporate America, there was no recognizing An, an A++ and the A++ in addition to additional credit. The work was done, and it onto the following thing to get done. So, those persevering hours could have been exceptional put to utilize. I couldve took in another expertise, met more associates or spread out for new assignments. I could have been buckling down on various things. I could have been working smarter. Now, before starting any undertaking or activity, I began asking myself these three inquiries to stop the over-arrangement and pro found plunging into subtleties that may not be needed:1. To what extent do I have to take a shot at this? When I would get ready messages to send to senior pioneers, I would fixate on the language and sentence structure. Furthermore, it would suck an excessive amount of time. Presently, on the off chance that I will send a significant email, I set clock or watch the clock so I dont get sucked into going through hours on one email. What's more, indeed, I still in every case despite everything check for spelling and language structure. Also, I ensure its short nobody needs to peruse a novel on their iPhone. 2. Who would i be able to request help? Before going through hours on something without anyone else and falling into the dark gap, I ponder internally: who can assist me with this work? Frequently, another person will have a knowledge or a snippet of data that can spare myself and the association time. What's more, rather than sending a long email, Ill discover time to interface with request help face to face. In the event that I am requesting someones help, I additionally attempt to make sure to ask how I could help them in return.3. How profound is deep? There are nothing of the sort as specialists any longer. We are on the whole attempting to fabricate ability over an assortment of orders. Things being what they are, for this specific undertaking, what amount of aptitude do I have to fabricate and what ability do I as of now have? What addresses will senior administration need replied? What level of detail is expected to effectively finish this work?I despite everything buckle down, yet I get myself while fixating on something business related. I get myself when I am approaching others for levels of subtleties that arent truly required. I get myself when I begin once again getting ready for something that, at long last, will be settled generally quickly.I still trust in buckling down. Furthermore, I have faith in saving my opportunity to concentrate on the th ings that will show the effect I can make for myself and people around me.

From Tax to HR

From Tax to HR Success Story > From: Job To: Portfolio career From Tax to HR “Every time I spoke to friends about my role, I had no enthusiasm; I felt that I was always complaining about it.” * From Tax to HR Laura Haigh's work didn't inspire her to climb the professional ladder. But making a change meant toughing out a demanding retraining process, recruitment consultants who just didn't 'get it', and a pay cut. Here, she shares why it's been worth it. What work were you doing previously? I was working as a tax accountant in a large professional services firm, and had done so both in practice and in industry for around 15 years. What are you doing now? I now work for three days a week as Finance and HR Controller for Oxford Summer Courses. We're a summer school based in Oxford, with courses being taught in Oxford, Cambridge, High Wycombe and India currently. I also work one day a week in my husband's family's archive storage business, Ardington Archives, providing HR and general business support. How did you feel in your work before you decided to make the change? I felt that I wasn't progressing. This was mainly because the work didn't interest me and I had no desire to climb the ladder in the professional services structure. Very little about the work itself made me look forward to going to work, and it definitely impacted on my overall well-being. Why did you change? I wanted to become the person who enjoyed their job. Every time I spoke to friends about my role, I had no enthusiasm; Ifelt that I was always complaining about it. I also felt that work was the missing piece in my life, as everything else has fortunately been very positive. When was the moment you decided to make the change? After having my two children and spending a few years coasting along, I felt that as they were getting older, and I was approaching 40that I really needed to do something about my job situation. Therefore, about two and a half years ago, I started to take some positive steps towards the change, having been on the Careershifters mailing list, and also having attended a Careershifters webinar about change. How did you choose your new career? I'd always had at the back of my mind that I should've gone into HR rather than accountancy. My husband is also an HR professional and I thought that he always seemed quite happy in his role, so I set about gaining a formal CIPD qualification. I somehow found the time between working a four-day week, looking after my children and other various commitments to complete the distance-learning qualification in around six months. Are you happy with the change? Absolutely â€" I am now that person who enjoys their job. What do you miss and what don't you miss? I don't miss anything from my old role (such as the politics and some of the really difficult clients), apart from some of the lovely colleagues and clients I used to work with. How did you go about making the shift? After I had completed my CIPD Level 5 qualification, I set about applying for some HR specific roles. Some of those interviews weren't successful, but then I stumbled across the role at Oxford Summer Courses, which was both Finance and HR and which was also part time. I felt that it would be a good step into the world of HR plus I could also use my skills from working in a financial environment as well, so that it wouldn't all be totally new, although in realityit was all totally new! What didn't go well? What wrong turns did you take? One of the main issues that I had was with recruitment consultants and prospective employers, who didn't get what I was trying to do. Initially, I didn't have a positive response from some of them. How did you handle your finances to make your shift possible? Finances had always been a large concern of mine as I knew that to make a shift, I would initially have to take a large pay cut. Therefore, I saved a bit during my last year in my previous role to cushion the blow a bit. What was the most difficult thing about changing? Doing the course and finding the time and the motivation to get through it. I knew that I had to do it to demonstrate some commitment to the change, and also to demonstrate that I had some knowledge outside of what I had experienced in my previous roles from an HR perspective. I always had this at the back of my mind, but it was sometimes really tough to commit a couple of extra hours after an already-demanding day. What help did you get? A hugely supportive husband, who is also a fantastic cook! What resources would you recommend to others? The Careershifters weekly email is great, as it keeps the whole process of change and success stories in the front of your mind. I would say it did have a role to play in encouraging me to take the leap. What have you learnt in the process? Change is good, don't be afraid to change. I now have the confidence to change again, now that I've finally done it. I'm so much more positive about work, and even though the role can be challenging and is constantly evolving as the company grows, I no longer dread going to work, and really enjoy my working days. What would you advise others to do in the same situation? Go for it â€" stop finding reasons not to. If you really hate what you're currently doing, then what you shift to can't be worse than what you're doing at the moment. Plan for the financial implications as well.
